Concrete Catwalk // Winter Citrus

Sometimes it feels like one of my main fashion missions each winter is to avoid blending into the sea of basic black coats and outerwear that populate the NYC streets and subways during the middle of winter.  A plausible solution?  Wearing one of the fluffiest (and wildest!) warm coats that I own, and adding bright flashes of winter citrus shades to keep things fresh and full of flavor.

Also, do you recognize that tank top worn as a vest?  I wore it last when the temps were probably a whopping 70 degrees warmer, but I thought it was funny how the color scheme stayed almost exactly the same.

Keep reading to see what else I'm wearing underneath all those layers (I promise it's cute!), and a full shoppable breakdown of the look.

Four to Adore // Vintage Shopping

I mentioned Monday that I'm traveling all week, and one of my favorite things about visiting other parts of the country is checking out the different vintage shops that many cities have to offer.  I can rarely resist stopping at the local thrift stores no matter where I am, and love picking out unique vintage finds that remind me of each trip.

Unfortunately, I never seem to have quite as much luck shopping for vintage in NYC, and if you happen to feel the same way or just get overwhelmed at the thought of over-packed racks, confusing sizes & the occasional funky smell - I've got a few online shopping suggestions that could hopefully make your hunt a bit more of a breeze.
  • Adored Vintage // Possibly one of the most incredible selections of vintage I've ever seen, AV owner Rodalee Bas is not only a gifted shop curator, but is also one of the biggest sweethearts ever.  Her knowledge of vintage clothing goes far beyond anyone I've ever met, and the lookbooks that she styles from the pieces on her site are beyond stunning.
  • Market Publique // The inventory here is comprised of collections from many different independent sellers, and the auction-style format is perfect for both eBay lovers, and those who are perpetually in search of a great deal.
  • Nifty Thrifty // This particular shop is one of the newer kids on the block, and is actually more of a mixture of vintage and secondhand pieces.  They launched just a handful of months ago, and have adopted the flash-sale site model, which seems to keep things fresh and interesting with ever-rotating themes and merchandise.
  • Beacon's Closet // In addition to the three locations in NYC (I sell my goodies at the Union Square shop!), Beacon's also happens to have a handy online shop for those who live out of the area.  The nerdy-vintage-hound in me especially loves following them on instragram to see some of the amazing garment tags that they find on the treasures that cycle through their stores.
This round-up wouldn't be complete without mentioning a few others I love to frequent, including...  Maeven, Gary Pepper Vintage, and The Greedy Seagull, and so many more***.  Check out the wares of these lovely ladies and get ready for some seriously gorgeous eye candy (and maybe a little shopping) for your mid-week morning!

***Feel free to share any others I may have missed in the comments... Love finding out about great new spots to shop!

Event // IFB Conference, February 2013

Clockwise from top left // Moderating in Feb 2012,
Waiting in the wings with fellow speakers in Sep 2012,
Hanging with some blog buddies in Feb 2011

It feels to me like we just barely wrapped up the holiday season, and that can only mean one thing in New York... Mercedes Benz Fashion Week is right around the corner!  I'm already getting excited about be-bopping around to previews, shows & events, but honestly - one of my favorite parts is getting to see and spend time with lots of my favorite friends for pretty much an entire 10 days straight.

Another NYFW entity that is always a highlight of mine is getting a chance to connect off-line with fellow style bloggers at the semi-annual IFB Conference that kicks off the beginning of the week.  I always find it SO encouraging to be around that many like-minded people in one room at one time, and both the dear friends and business contacts I've made by being at  the last 5 (!) sessions have made a huge difference in both my personal and professional life.

Nab your tickets here, start getting your media kit & business cards together and read up on some of the incredibly inspiring speakers that are planned, because you're not going to want to miss out on one of the best line-ups they've ever had!

Below are the basic deets for the day, but you can visit the IFBCON event page for lots of extra helpful information...

IFBCON - February 6-7, 2013
Where: The Altman Building
135 W 18th St  New York, NY 10011
Dedicated hashtag: #IFBCON

Please come say hi if you're able to make it, but be warned: I'm notorious for stealing a HUGE hug when meeting new friends. :)  Would love to see and connect with you there!!!

Concrete Catwalk // Striped Stretchy Skirt

So many things happening this week... Shall we get right to it?  It's a bit of an unconventional morning for me today (explanation below), but I'm still feeling groovy in my new bangs and have been enjoying the little extra injection of inspiration they've given me for my recent style choices.  Love how even small hair changes can make such a big difference in how I feel about getting dressed!

Keep reading for the rest of the look, and to find out about a few fun things going on with me lately...

Concrete Catwalk // Jumpsuit

When I posted a few weeks ago about styling a jumpsuit for winter, I had no idea I'd come across the little gem you see above just a few days later at the Brooklyn Flea.  I took a leap of faith by purchasing without trying-on, and was very pleased to find that it fits like a glove.  It has quickly become one of my favorite-ever vintage finds, and I love knowing that I'll be able to wear it year-round for quite sometime.

Taking a cue from the pages of my own blog, I added a mixed media jacket, some winter accessories, and of course, some bold color for good measure.  Check out the rest of the outfit photos, and full details below, and let me know what you think of my version here in the comments!

P.S.  You win 50 extra points and a big virtual hug from me if you can identify the location that the outfit photos above were taken. :)

P.P.S. Happy Friday!!!

Pin Party // Icy Blues

I know it's been a while, but back in November I hinted at one of the fun new blog features I'd be launching in 2013, and I'm excited to share the first edition here with you today!  In keeping with my "More in 2013" goals (there they are again!), this new column has to do with entertaining family and friends in your own home.

Pin Party is is a fun collaboration that I created with my sweet assistant Sarah, and we're so excited about it that we already have next month's edition finished and waiting in the wings.  With our shared love of entertaining, combined with my recently reinvigorated love of Pinterest (follow me here!), we'll be sharing a seasonal party-planning mood board during each month of the year.

The collections are meant to give you ideas for hosting your very own parties or events, and are all based off of a gorgeous piece of original art or design to get the look going.  Each of the theme elements of the board is meant to echo the look of the inspiration piece, and hopefully will encourage you to design, dine, drink, dress & decorate with a special flair of your very own.
DESIGN // As a nod to the freezing cold wind barreling against our windows at the moment, today's feature focuses on embracing the icy blue glaciers in the art that you see above, and using it as an excuse to have some neighbors over for a hot meal in front of a warm fire.  (Still trying to track down the original source to give the artist credit - feel free to let me know if you have any idea!)
Dine // Admittedly, these macarons are more of a dessert than a main course, but pile them up in one single color on mismatched blue plates, and they make a big impact while providing a yummy snack that your guests can munch on throughout the evening.
Dress // When hosting at home, I like to keep my look simple and unfussy so that I don't have to think about it too much throughout the night.  Sticking with a monochromatic look like the one above would be an easy choice, and for a more casual gathering, I love this ruffled DVF top paired with sky blue denim flares.
Drink // Nothing like a hot toddy on a cold day (I like mine with extra lemon!), and you'd get extra party-style points for serving yours in these gorgeous blue floral mugs (only $20 for a set of four!).
Decorate // How perfect is this centerpiece? And SO simple... Gather blue glass bottles from your local thrift store or flea market, fill with water dyed with a smidge of blue food coloring and add freshly cut white flowers to give them that moody hue.
Do you have any events planned for the rest of the month?  We've been having dinner parties like it's our job recently (love it!), and even just having one other person here for a meal is such a fun excuse to test out new recipes and decorating ideas.  Wish I could have you all over sometime!!! :)

Concrete Catwalk // New 'Do

If you follow along with my adventures on instagram, you've already seen that I've switched up my look just a bit lately.  Eek! Bangs!  After nearly two years of trimming my ends by myself over the bathroom sink (ugh, I KNOW), I took the plunge and let my ridiculously talented friend Chris go to town on my locks.   We settled on heavy fringe with some piece-y layers around the front, and although I can't believe how different it looks with most of my blonde gone, I've been having a lot of fun playing around with the new 'do.

Keep reading for more photos after the jump, and I can't wait to hear what you think!

[Monday] Sprinkles // Flora & Fauna

Anyone else want to give a WOOT WOOT for a three-day weekend?  As someone who runs the show here at S&P HQ, I'm often tempted to work during times that most everyone else has off, but am making it a point to be better about observing designated holidays and just generally taking a little more time for myself in 2013.

Something that has made it a lot easier so far, has been planning for fun adventures and day-trips with Mr. Pepper, and this weekend has been full of them!  Saturday, we went to visit the Princeton University campus in NJ (along with sampling 3 different flavors of locally made artisan ice cream at two different shops!), yesterday was thrifting and a movie (we saw this one and it was AMAZING), and today we're headed to the American Museum of Natural History (so excited to see the butterfly exhibit)!

Today's sprinkles are a bit of an [unintentional] homage to our upcoming excursion, but I love that they correspond to the botanical beauty that we'll likely come across this afternoon.
  • one // Bringing new meaning to feeling "at one with nature", this artwork by Jon Duenas has me daydreaming about warmer temps and more time spent soaking up the sun outside. (via Design Sponge)
  • two // Love salsa as much as I do?  (Doubt it.)  Nonetheless, this growing kit would be the perfect gift for the spice-lover in your your life, or a tasty new hobby to take on yourself!
  • three // So not over the patterned denim trend over here and this floral pair is too cute for words.  Reminds me a bit of this Shop Her Style post from a few weeks back!
  • four: // I'm a huge fan of terrariums and the unexpected tiny details of these beauties are reinforcing my love for all things tiny(via Emmadime)
  • five // Missing California more than normal these days, and seeing the photos from this drive through Joshua Tree National Park made me realize that it's just time to plan another trip already.  Palm Springs, anyone?
Alright, now your turn to share: Do you have the day off today? Any fun adventures planned that I should know about? ;)

In Pictures // Movement in 2012

I had so much fun looking through old S&P posts to find favorites outfits for last weekend's post, that I thought it might also be fun to do a round up of "movement moments" from the past year as well.  By looking at these photos, you could probably guess that I have a hard time sitting (or standing!) still, and I've had quite a bit of fun entertaining myself by switching it up in front of the camera every once in a while.

See below for the rest of the photos, and a little call-to-action that I'd LOVE to have a little help with, if you're up for it!  (This is your chance to have a say in what you'll see on Style & Pepper in 2013!)

Concrete Catwalk // Bundled to the Brim

The weather here lately has been so all over the map (it's supposed to be 47 degrees in NYC this weekend!), and even though I'm bundled up to the brim in these photos, I'm thinking it will all make sense next week when the high temp is barely expected to top freezing at 32.  Oof.

In any case, it will give me an excuse to bust out some of my heavy winter coats, and favorite winter accessories, as I gladly did for these photos taken when we headed out to a couple of NYE parties a few weeks ago (And just for fun, you can see the last time I wore the coat here!).

Check out the rest of the photos and the outfit details below, and if it's chilly where you are, tell me how you're staying stylishly-warm in the comments!

Concrete Catwalk // Evolve

Always a sucker for products with meaning, I was super excited to hear about the latest and greatest from one of my all-time faves.  Meg Biram is one of the most creatively savvy people I know, and the energy and heart that she has put into to her brand new t-shirt line, Manifesto, is simply inspiring.

A Manifesto is defined as a written statement declaring intentions, motives or views, and with each month of the year, brings a new tee featuring a word that is sure to encourage us to embrace it as manifesto of our very own.

Not only does it make me feel a little like a chic-lady-version of SuperMan, this t-shirt is already one of my favorite items of 2013.  I honestly can't say which I love more: the super-soft knit fabric, chic handwritten design, or the incredible meaning it has for the current season of our lives.  It has had me daydreaming and scheming all week about how I'd like to evolve in 2013 (and feeling grateful for how far I've come in the last few years), and it already feels like a monthly practice that I could really get used to. :)

Find out more about the project by viewing the lookbook here, and visit Manifesto tees to grab one for yourself.  (There's only a limited amount of each word/month, so if this one speaks to you, you'll want to snatch it up before they're gone!)

How to Style // Workout & Wear-around

Admittedly, I spend a LOT of time in my workout clothes, and as someone who likes looking put together just as much as I like feeling great, exercising in style just seems to make sense for me.

We talked yesterday about how looking great while you work out can make it a more positive experience, but if you're a multi-tasker like I am (gym, errands, grocery store!) you most likely are needing your exercise gear to do double duty every now and again (...or at least look semi-presentable for that cutie who always seems to pick the treadmill next to yours)!  ;)

When I'm pressed for time, I love making some of my more basic exercise clothes (especially these super-slimming compression leggings!) work as a stand-in for regular wardrobe pieces, and today's post is an example of how you can easily use Old Navy Active to switch up your look and go from be-bopping around the gym to zipping around town in no time.

Work-out:
Active Padded Cami // $12
Active Compression Leggings // $22
Micro Performance Fleece Jacket // $25
Active Striped Sneakers // $19
Zip-top Tote // $25
Wear-around:
Active Compression Leggings // $22
Long-sleeve Tunic Tee // $20
Leopard [Michael Kors] Cardigan // $90
Hooded Anorak // $25
Lace-up Wedge Booties // $20
//

Get Fit // What to Wear

*Tweet me @styleandpepper
with how you plan to #getfit this week!*

Time for another Get Fit feature, Friends!  Today, I'm going to talk about something that is often overlooked, but can be a surprisingly effective element of success in your own fitness routine... functional, AND fashion forward workout clothes.

These two elements do not always go hand in hand, but here is a simple concept that I've found to be true:  If your active wear makes you look and feel great, you're more likely to want to put it on, and the more you have it on - the more inspired you'll be to actually spend time being active!  (It's true... Promise!)  See below for some helpful notes to remember when shopping for workout wear, and find out how the new Active by Old Navy line measures up!

In Pictures // Favorites from 2012

Well I wasn't really planning to do any type of 2012 recap post here on S&P, but after some reflection during a planning session for the coming months, I realized this past year has been pretty dang fun!

See below for a sampling of my favorite looks, and a chance to look WAY back at a few of S&P's round-ups from years past...

Impact // Radiant Cosmetics

Image credits // Orange, Coral, Pink, Nude, Red

One of the topics that I'd love to write more about here in 2013 are little ways that we can incorporate actions that help others into our everyday lives.  Enter the newest S&P column: Impact.

The first story to be featured is one that I believe so strongly in, both as a cause in general and as a brand that I support and love.  Radiant Cosmetics has been a staple in my makeup bag for the past year or so, and I can personally attest that the quality is incredible.  Knowing that by shopping from their amazing beauty line creates awareness and support for the fight against human trafficking, makes blushing my cheeks with their peach-y "Hue" just a little bit more meaningful.  They were also one of Pepperologie's generous sponsors last month, and we definitely share the goal of spreading health, happiness, and feeling beautiful amongst our fellow communities of women.

There are approximately 27 million modern-day slaves in the world today, which is a staggering number when you think about what this truly means.  The U.S. government estimates that over 100,000 individuals are bound into the sex trade in our country each year; foreign women and children brought to the U.S. for sex trafficking find themselves forced to work against their will in brothels, strip clubs, escort services, and massage parlors.  It truly breaks my heart to know that things like this are happening right this very minute.

January is National Human Trafficking Awareness Month and I'm joining the campaign to "Kiss Slavery Goodbye" for the remainder of the next few weeks.  The ways you can help are super simple!
  • Pin the image above!  Using the hashtag #kissslaverygoodbye, we'd love to have you share the cause with everyone you know.
  • Shop their site!  For every tube of Radiant lipstick purchased this month (my favorites are Moxie & Moscow!), another will be donated to a survivor or victim of human trafficking via the organizations, Redeemed (Austin, TX) and The Trade (Brazil).  This is in addition to the usual 20% of profits normally given directly to Redeemed.
  • Spread the word!  Visit the Kiss Slavery Goodbye page of their site to find out more information, and use your social media channels to share this mission with your followers and fans.  How easy is it to tweet and instagram a photo of yourself in your favorite lippy?!
You may already have guessed that I love helping women to feel like the best version of themselves possible, and I've experienced firsthand what a swipe of great lipstick can do.  I can't even fathom what the women who escape from these human trafficking situations have experienced, but if as something as simple as participating in this campaign can help to increase their confidence and help them move towards getting back on their feet, then I'm all for it.

More Info // Radiant Cosmetics is a social enterprise makeup company dedicated to ending human trafficking. You can connect with them further on Twitter and Facebook, and thank you so much for letting me share this great cause with you!

Concrete Catwalk // Bright Blue & Amused

Pulling some pics from over our holiday trip to the west coast, and as you can tell, am not posing in front of my usual backdrop.  One of the highlights of our trips to California was taking our sweet nephews to Knottsberry Farm for some Christmas festivities (and a bit of CRAZY rollercoaster riding for Aunt Jessie & Uncle G).

DIY // Fluorescent Flowers

Check out the full outfit you see above, here!

I mentioned last week that I've done the neon necklace update before, but couldn't resist using a similar technique to save this old favorite from the giveaway pile by giving it new life.

Keep reading for the easy 1-2-3 below, and let me know if you try it out for yourself!

Shop Her Style // Romper & Red Lips

It may seem a bit "out there" at first glance, but ever since pinning this romper + leather jacket combo a few weeks ago, I haven't been able to stop thinking about trying to winter-ize my own jumpsuits to be able to wear them throughout the year.

The one in the photograph is unique because of the billowy bottom-half, but it seems like one with more tapered legs would be fine tucked into boots, right?  I'd probably also add a cozy sweater layer under the leather jacket if that didn't feel like it was going to be enough warmth by itself.

What do you think... Should I give it a go?  You know I'll share with you here if I do! :)

Spice Up Your Space // Instakitchen

I'm always looking for fun ways to add a bit of interest and personality to our home, and when I visited the Shutterfly holiday decor showroom a few months ago, my mind instantly started reeling with the personalization possibilities!

One of the items that stood out to me the most at the event were the acrylic frameless prints that seemed to add a shiny sleekness to every corner that they appeared in.  I was feeling particularly inspired in the kitchen area of the display, and couldn't stop thinking about getting some of my own "food photography" (via my instagram feed!) framed and mounted to hang above the space where I cook our meals everyday!

I also loved the idea of these smaller acrylic photo blocks for a desk space or night stand, and thought that these frameless prints would be perfect for a less highly trafficked area.  One of the reasons I went with the larger acrylic option is because anything near your stove can tend to get a little gunky if you cook as much as I do, and this way I'll be able to wipe them down whenever I need to.

Keep reading for a close up of our new wall decor, and a few other ideas on how to spice up your own space!!

I know, I know... There are MORE than five items in the round-up you see above.  The thing is: I was shopping Need Supply's post-holiday deals (take an extra 15%-off sale items by entering EXTRA15 at check-out!) and I just couldn't narrow it down!  I chose my five favorites, and figured you wouldn't mind if I added in a few extras to complete the look.  Forgive me?

(Oh, you're too kind.)

Question is: I'm thinking the outfit still needs some type of extra warmth at this time of year... any thoughts on what you'd pair it with?  Denim jacket and a gorgeous fringey gold scarf perhaps?

To a Joyful New Year...

Image Credits // Entertain, Move, Unplug, Bicycle, Hair

The very first S&P post of 2013 - Hoorah!

Today, I'm sharing a few things that I'm hoping for MORE of in the new year.  Not exactly resolutions, as those usually seem like things that we vow to do less of (eat junk, drink alcohol, spend too much, etc), but a few little bits of life that I'd simply like to do more of in the coming year

Entertain more // G and I love throwing a great party, and we have a long list of friends (new and old!) that we'd love to have to dinner before the year ends - Just a bit of fun on the quest to make our home "A place to love".  Here's to more yummy food, more bubbly beverages & more late-night conversations and cherished friendships.

Unplug more // Whenever I get a tiny squiggle of free time, it often gets taken up by my never ending to-do list. (Can anyone relate?) Instead of letting it slip away to work related minutiae, I'm hoping for more more book-readng, more DIY projects & more time snuggling on the couch with G and Sadie.

Experiment more // I haven't been to a salon for a haircut or color for over 1.5 years, and have lately been feeling inspired to switch things up by trying a few different hairstyles lately.  Currently working up the courage to try more fringe, more braids, more curls & maybe even a great big chop one of these days.

Ride my bike more // I snagged a beautiful little red vintage bike (and named her Ruby!) at the end of last summer, and hardly got any chance to ride her before the freezing-cold weather arrived.  Might be a bit chilly until Spring, but excited for more leisurely rides, cute bicycle-style posts, quicker errand-running, and perhaps some new wheels for my Sweet G!

Move more // Ever since the Hurricane hit in October, my own personal fitness routine and goals have completely fallen by the wayside.  Now that the holidays have zipped by and the days will slowly be getting longer, I'm hoping for more outdoor runs, more focused discipline, more dancing and hopefully trying more new classes whenever I get the chance!

Not trying to wiggle out of setting any tangible goals here, but I suspect that being intentional about adding just a bit more of each of these things to my life will be a great start towards a very good year.  Does that sound like it makes sense?

Are you planning on adding anything more to your life in 2013?  I'd love to hear your thoughts, and provide some encouragement in the comments, so feel free to share and I hope you have a fabulous first day of the new year!!
